There’s always something that keeps us from being fully productive. While we strive to concentrate on our work, we can at times get distracted. Here are 9 useful practices we can do to keep our minds focused.
Determine What Distracts You
Each of us is unique. We have different interests that fill our minds or different things that keep us busy. The trick is to honestly assess what takes most of your focus, what is constantly on your mind, what distracts you, and what you find yourself doing most.
Eliminate Distractions
Once you’ve made this assessment, remove your personal distractions when you are working. These distractions, thoughts, or tasks may be important, but for the time that you spend working, you must lessen or remove these all together so that you can work productively.
Focus on One Task at a Time
You may think you are accomplishing a lot of work by multitasking, but that is actually the opposite. Although, it is still a case-to-case basis, study shows that “trying to focus on two or more cognitively demanding tasks results in decrements in performance, and memory, of any of the tasks”. Put your entire attention, rather, at the task at hand so that you can fully give it your best.
Take Timely Breaks
Burn out is real. If you overwork yourself, you will not be productive. Take a break to be able to rest your mind and body. On the other hand, you will not get anything done if you take too much breaks. Find the right balance of the length and schedule of these breaks.
Take a Walk
While you are on a break, consider walking outside. A change of scene can boost inspiration and recharge your mind. According to Lucy Jo Palladino, Ph.D, psychologist and author of Find Your Focus Zone: An Effective New Plan to Defeat Distraction and Overload, a “quick walk outdoors” is an effective short break.
Lists!
With a lot on your plate, there is no way you can mentally track everything. Make reminders, calendars, and lists to stay on top of everything you need to do.
Stay Healthy
Working hard may cause you to forget this crucial step. Eating nutritious food powers your mind to stay sharp and focused. While you are putting in your working hours, do not forget to get a good night’s rest to recharge your brain cells for more productive work.
